Navy Strength

The Scots Pine, the tree with which the Mastbos
was planted by Count Hendrik III from Nassau
from 1515, is one of the important ingredients
from Ginneken Gin. These Scots pines from the
Mastbos, also called mast trees, were among others
used for the masts of ships in the 17th century.

The term Navy Strength originates from the time when
ships carried their gin in the hold near the gunpowder.
A leakage of those two would prevent the canons from
working. To ensure that the powder would still fire
up when detonated, they had to increase the alcohol
percentage to 57% to make it gunpowder proof. That’s
why Gins with 57% alcohol are named Navy Strength.
